Piercing in Saaremaa — an overview

Piercing is a single service in the Saare County selection rather than a market segment of its own: of the county's five salons, one lists piercing among its services. In practice that usually means earlobes and the simpler ear-cartilage piercings, sometimes also the nose, eyebrow or navel. A properly done piercing requires a sterile single-use needle, autoclaved instruments and a first piece of jewellery in implant-grade titanium or surgical steel. A piercing gun is now considered the poorer option even for earlobes, because it tears tissue instead of passing a needle through it, and its tip cannot be sterilised in an autoclave. The appointment usually takes 20–40 minutes, of which the piercing itself takes seconds; the rest goes on the consultation, marking the placement and explaining the aftercare.

Healing takes longer than most first-timers expect: 6–8 weeks for an earlobe, and often three months to a year for cartilage, the nose and the navel. During that time the piercing is rinsed with saline solution, the jewellery is not twisted or changed too early, and any irritation is better taken to the piercer than to the internet. If you are coming from elsewhere on the island or from the mainland, fit everything into one trip. Arrange the appointment by phone, ask in advance whether the piercing you want is done and what the first piece of jewellery is made of, and bring photo ID — proof of age is often requested from adults too. A minor is generally pierced only with a parent's consent and in their presence; check with the salon which age limit applies there. Bear in mind as well that changing the jewellery means a second trip: ask right away whether that can be done on site or whether instructions over the phone will do.

How to choose a piercing salon in Saaremaa?

When the directory shows a single provider in the county, the question is not one of rankings but of whether the service meets the basics. Watch whether packaging is opened in front of you, whether the piercer wears single-use gloves, whether the working surface is covered, and whether the aftercare instructions are also given in writing. The second criterion is experience with the specific piercing you want: placing an ear-cartilage, nose or navel piercing calls for a different hand than an earlobe. Ask to see the piercer's portfolio and what jewellery the salon sells — a cheap alloy releases nickel into a healing piercing and causes irritation. Do mention it as well if you take blood-thinning medication, are pregnant, or know that you tolerate some metals badly; those circumstances affect both the choice of jewellery and whether the piercing should be done right now at all.

The third thing is timing, which matters more on an island than on the mainland. A fresh piercing does not belong in the sea, a swimming pool or a sauna, so plan the visit well ahead of the summer season and any travel: several weeks ahead for an earlobe, and rather a couple of months for cartilage.
