What is a men's barber and which styles are popular?

A men's barber (often simply called a barber) is a hairdresser who specialises in men's haircuts and beard care. The core techniques are scissor cutting, clipper work with different guard lengths (numbers 0–8) and finishing with a straight razor — the last of these gives sharp edges and a clean outline.

The most popular styles in Estonia are the classic side part, the fade (a smooth transition from short sides up to longer hair on top), the taper, the undercut and the slick back. Among beard styles, the neatly kept short beard, short line-ups running into the sideburns and moustaches dominate. A good men's barber knows which cut suits which face shape.

In Estonia the classic hairdressing salon (serving men, women and children alike) is still more common than the specialised barbershop, but through the 2020s the barbershop concept has expanded fast — especially in Tallinn and Tartu, where there are dozens of specialised men's salons.

Men's barber prices in Estonia and how a visit runs

A men's haircut in Estonia usually costs €18–35. In specialised barbershops in central Tallinn it is €30–45, in smaller towns €12–20. A beard trim on its own costs €12–25, and combined with a haircut €30–55. The hot-towel treatment, a classic barbering element, is an extra €5–15.

A standard appointment lasts 30–45 minutes (haircut) or 60–75 minutes (haircut + beard + treatment). A good men's barber starts with a consultation — asking what style you want, how you style your hair day to day, and showing reference photos where useful.

Booking ahead is standard in most salons, especially for afternoon and weekend slots. Some popular barbers in Tallinn are booked 1–2 weeks in advance.

How to choose a salon with a good men's barber?

Look at the Instagram portfolio — a good men's barber's account is full of before-and-after shots across a range of styles. Pay attention to the quality of the fade (a smooth transition with no visible lines), the cleanness of the edges and the symmetry. Signs of poor work are a "step" in the transition, uneven side lengths or a ragged beard line.

A good men's barber sends you away with practical advice: which styling product to use (wax vs pomade vs cream), how to keep a fresh cut looking sharp and when to come back. Typically the next cut is 4–6 weeks later — with a fade, preferably after 3–4 weeks.

Beard care at home means regular conditioning (beard oil) and combing. The beard shape needs professional reshaping every 2–4 weeks — usually a quicker and cheaper visit (15–20 min, €12–18).
