What is microneedling?

Microneedling means making many small punctures (0.25–3 mm deep) into the skin with a sterile device. The micro-injuries trigger a controlled healing response: collagen synthesis increases, the tissue restructures itself and the texture of the skin improves. The difference from superficial dermarollers is that a professional device works with a vertical motor and reaches an exact depth.

Microneedling is effective for acne scars, stretch marks, thinned skin, large pores, fine lines and melasma. It is often combined with PRP (growth factors from your own blood plasma), which increases the collagen-building effect. A typical course is 3–6 sessions at 4-week intervals.

In Estonia, medical microneedling is done at aesthetic clinics licensed by the Health Board. A superficial dermaroller (under 0.5 mm) is permitted at a beautician's, but a deeper procedure has to take place in a medical setting in order to control the risk of infection.

Microneedling prices in Estonia and how a session runs

A single microneedling session in Estonia usually costs €120–250 (for the face). Packages (3–6 sessions) cost €350–1200. A microneedling + PRP combination costs €200–350 per session. The neck and décolletage are often an extra €60–120.

At the consultation the doctor assesses the skin problem and any contraindications and draws up a plan. The session itself lasts 60–90 minutes (including the time the numbing cream needs to work). After numbing, serums are applied and then the microneedling is carried out, taking 20–30 minutes. A soothing mask is applied at the end.

After the session the skin is red with a mild burning sensation for 24–72 hours (similar to moderate sunburn). Social downtime is 1–3 days. Sport, the sauna, swimming pools and sun must be avoided for 48–72 hours. SPF 50+ sun protection is compulsory for at least 2 weeks.

How to choose a clinic that offers microneedling?

The first criterion is a Health Board licence and certified medical staff. Look for a clinic that uses well-known medical devices (Dermapen, SkinPen, Eclipse Micropen) — these are FDA-certified and the depth is precisely controllable.

Sterility is critical. The microneedling tip must be sterile and single-use for every client (it must not be swapped between clients). Ask about hygiene practice before you book — this is your safety.

Risks, side effects and contraindications

Typical side effects are redness for 1–3 days, mild peeling for 3–7 days and temporary sensitivity. More serious and rare risks: post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (especially in darker skin types), infection (if hygiene is poor), allergy to the serums used.

Contraindications: pregnancy, breastfeeding, active acne, herpes simplex in an active phase, isotretinoin within the last 6 months, autoimmune disease, blood clotting disorders, a history of keloid scarring. Talk openly about your whole medical history at the consultation.

Microneedling in Estonia's most popular cities

Microneedling is done mainly at aesthetic medicine clinics in Tallinn and Tartu. Pärnu also has a few qualified clinics. Quality equipment and experienced medical staff are found above all in the larger cities.
