Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure in which excess fatty tissue is removed from a specific area of the body. In Estonia, liposuction must be performed by a certified cosmetic surgeon at a clinic licensed by the Health Board (Terviseamet), under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia. Liposuction is suitable for removing localised fat deposits (the abdomen, inner thighs, the backs of the upper arms, the jawline) — it is not a weight-loss method and does not replace diet and exercise. It is most effective for people who are at a stable weight but whose body shape does not respond to their efforts in certain places. Below we explain what the procedure involves, what it costs and how to choose an experienced cosmetic surgeon.
What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a procedure in which the cosmetic surgeon inserts a small hollow cannula under the skin and suctions out fatty tissue using a vacuum. The methods used in Estonia are conventional (suction-assisted) liposuction, ultrasound-assisted (VASER, UAL) and laser-assisted (Smart Lipo) variants. VASER is popular for more delicate areas and for body contouring.
Typical treatment areas: the abdomen (lower and upper), the inner and outer thighs, the buttocks, the backs of the upper arms, the jawline (removing a "double chin") and the fat rolls across the upper back. One procedure can usually remove 3–5 litres of fat (larger volumes may require a staged approach).
Liposuction is not a weight-loss method — it removes fat cells in a specific place, but if a person gains weight after the operation, the remaining fat cells in other areas will enlarge. A stable weight before and after is the key to maintaining the result.
Liposuction prices in Estonia and how the procedure goes
The price of liposuction in Estonia depends on the treatment area and the technique used. One treatment area (for example the jawline or a small part of the abdomen) costs €1500–3000. A larger treatment area (the whole abdomen, the inner thighs) costs €3000–5500. Combined treatment of several areas costs €4000–8000. VASER and Smart Lipo are usually €500–1000 more expensive than classic liposuction.
At the consultation the cosmetic surgeon assesses whether you are a suitable candidate, draws up a plan and marks up the photographs. Pre-operative tests are also required (blood work, an electrocardiogram). The procedure itself takes 1–4 hours, depending on the number of treatment areas and the volume of fat to be removed.
After the operation you stay one night at the clinic (for larger operations) or may go straight home (for smaller ones). Compression garments are worn for 4–6 weeks to support healing and tissue recovery. Social downtime is 2–4 weeks. Sport and physical exertion can resume after 6–8 weeks.
How to choose a cosmetic surgeon for liposuction?
The first criterion is a Health Board licence and a certified cosmetic surgeon whose core practice includes liposuction (not just an occasional sideline). Look at the Instagram and website portfolio — before-and-after photos from the same angle, with the same lighting, and a realistic depiction of the immediate result. A strong cosmetic surgeon shows not only "perfect" results but also the changes achieved on ordinary body types.
At the consultation, ask: how many liposuction procedures the surgeon has performed (over their whole career and in the past year); who makes up the operating theatre team and how possible complications would be handled; and what the aftercare plan is. A good surgeon does not promise a result they cannot guarantee.

Risks, side effects and contraindications
Typical side effects are swelling for 4–8 weeks, bruising for 2–3 weeks, and tissue tenderness and numbness for 4–12 weeks (which resolves on its own). More serious and rare risks: infection, an uneven result, haematoma, blood clotting disorders, skin laxity in the treated area (if skin elasticity was already low) and seroma (a collection of fluid).
Contraindications: pregnancy, breastfeeding, uncontrolled diabetes, heart disease, uncontrolled hypertension, smoking within 4 weeks before and after, blood clotting disorders, autoimmune diseases and unstable weight. Be open at the consultation about your entire medical history. The mandatory pre-operative tests rule out most of the risks.
Liposuction in Estonia's larger cities
Liposuction is offered mainly by cosmetic surgery clinics in Tallinn, and by some in Tartu. There are relatively few surgeons in Estonia who specialise in liposuction, which is why many patients look for a specific doctor rather than a specific city. Pärnu also has a few qualified cosmetic surgeons.

Who is allowed to perform liposuction in Estonia?

Does liposuction leave scars?
Liposuction leaves small (3–5 mm) entry scars where the cannula was inserted. An experienced surgeon places these in concealed spots (for example natural creases or the underwear line). Over 6–12 months the scars become barely noticeable.
Do I have to follow a diet after liposuction?
For the first 2 weeks a light diet is recommended (avoiding salt to reduce swelling). In the long term no special diet is needed, but maintaining your weight is the key to maintaining the result — regular exercise and a balanced diet are recommended to stop the remaining fat cells from expanding.
