Classic vs volume lash extensions — which suits you

When booking lash extensions, one of the first choices is: classic (1:1) or volume (2D–6D+)? The decision affects the look, the price, how often you need maintenance, and the health of your natural lashes. This guide will help you choose.

The technical difference

Classic (1:1)

One synthetic lash fiber is glued to each natural lash. The fiber thickness is close to a natural lash (0,15–0,20 mm). Result: “your own lashes, only thicker and longer”.

Volume (2D–5D)

2–5 very fine fibers (0,03–0,07 mm) are glued to each natural lash, forming a “fan” or “flower”. Result: thicker, darker, similar to mascara.

Mega volume (6D+)

6+ fibers per natural lash. Very dramatic, but it requires a skilled technician. The fibers must be extremely fine (0,03 mm), otherwise the natural lash gets damaged.

Which one to choose — situation-based

Choose classic if:

• You're trying lash extensions for the first time.
• You work in a conservative environment (for example, a corporate office).
• You want a subtle result.
• You have enough natural lashes of your own.
• You want minimal maintenance risk.

Choose volume (2D–3D) if:

• You've had classic before and want a bolder effect.
• You have medium-density natural lashes.
• You often wear mascara and want to give it up.
• You're in a younger age group (20–35) and prefer a glam style.

Choose mega volume (5D+) if:

• You have sparse natural lashes.
• You want an especially dramatic result.
• You work in a visually intensive environment (entertainment, social media).
• You've found a genuinely experienced technician (3+ years, mega volume certification).

What not to do

• Don't try mega volume with a beginner technician. Too thick fibers + wrong proportions = loss of natural lashes.
• Don't switch from classic to volume within 1 month. Natural lashes need recovery time between fiber types.
• Don't get volume if you have very sensitive eyes. More glue = higher allergy risk.

How to choose a technician for either type

The same principles apply to both:

• At least 10+ portfolio pieces in the same style, in close-up.
• International certification (Lash Inc, ReLash, Lashlovers).
• The salon is registered in the Business Register.
• Single-use tools and disinfected tweezers.
• For mega volume: at least 3 years of experience.
