Lipids that occur naturally in the skin's hydrolipid layer. They strengthen the barrier and hold moisture in — critical through an Estonian winter.
Ceramides are lipid-like molecules that form the natural lipid-bond structure of the skin's outer layer (the stratum corneum) — by one estimate they make up around 50% of the stratum corneum's composition. Ceramides lock in moisture and keep the skin's barrier function healthy. At Estonian beauty salons and cosmetologists', ceramide-strengthening creams are recommended for dry, winter-affected, irritated or sensitive skin types, as well as after peeling treatments.
How do ceramides work?
The skin's outer layer is made up of a "brick and mortar" structure of corneocytes and lipids, in which ceramides form part of the mortar (~50%), along with cholesterol (~25%) and free fatty acids (~25%). When this ratio is disrupted (by ageing, heat, harsh cleansers, or overuse of AHA/BHA), the skin loses its ability to hold moisture and becomes sensitive, dry and easily irritated.
Creams and serums containing ceramides restore this barrier, and are especially effective when they also contain cholesterol and fatty acids ("barrier repair" products). Combining them with niacinamide boosts the result, since niacinamide stimulates the skin to produce more ceramides of its own. Suitable for use morning and evening, especially after peels or in winter.

Estonian beauty salons, pharmacies and cosmetics shops carry many ceramide creams across a range of price points. At mass-market retailers (Apteek 1, Selver) you'll find CeraVe and Cetaphil products for €12–25 per pack. More professional pharmacy brands (La Roche-Posay Toleriane, Avene Tolerance, Bioderma Atoderm) cost €18–40. Salon brands (Eucerin, SkinCeuticals, Dr. Hauschka) cost €35–80. A ceramide serum is a good choice year-round for people with sensitive or dry skin.
