Hair transplant is a surgical procedure in which hair follicles are removed from a donor area (usually the back of the scalp) and implanted into thinning or bald areas. In Estonia, aesthetic clinics and hair transplant centres holding a Health Board (Terviseamet) operating licence offer this; the methods used are FUE (follicles extracted one by one) and FUT (strip removal). The result is permanent, because the transplanted follicles retain their genetic resistance to balding.
How does hair transplant work?
With the FUE method, the surgeon uses a 0.8–1.0 mm punch extractor and removes 1,500–4,000 grafts one follicle at a time from the back of the scalp, depending on need. The donor area is left with no large scar, only small dot scars that disappear under short hair. The FUT method removes a strip of skin from the back of the scalp, from which the surgeon then separates the follicles under a microscope — this leaves a longer linear scar.
The removed follicles are preserved in a special solution and later implanted into the treatment area with a micro-forked tip, following the angle of the natural hair direction. The procedure takes 4–10 hours and is done under local anaesthesia. The first new hairs grow within 3–4 months, and the final result is visible after 12–18 months.
