LED therapy
Also known as: LED light therapy, phototherapy, photobiomodulation
Treatment with low-energy light-emitting diodes. Different wavelengths target different skin concerns — red for collagen, blue for acne bacteria.
LED therapy, or light therapy, uses LED light of different wavelengths to stimulate the skin at the cellular level — red light (630–660 nm) revives collagen production and reduces inflammation, and blue light (415 nm) destroys acne-causing bacteria. In Estonian beauty salons and beauty studios, LED therapy is often used combined with other treatments (facial cleansing, peels, microneedling), but it is also available as a standalone session.
How does LED therapy work?
LED light penetrates the skin to different depths depending on wavelength: blue light acts in the surface layer and destroys the acne-causing bacteria Cutibacterium acnes, reducing inflammatory breakouts. Red light penetrates deeper (up to 8–10 mm) and stimulates the mitochondria to produce more ATP, which speeds up collagen production in fibroblasts and the remodelling of collagen fibres.
A single session lasts 15–30 minutes, and the effect usually requires a course (6–12 sessions spaced 1–2 weeks apart). LED therapy has no downtime and no side effects, so it can be combined with other treatments in the same session. The result builds gradually: blue light shows its first results in 2–4 weeks, red light in 6–8 weeks.
LED therapy in Estonia
In Estonian beauty salons and beauty studios, a standalone LED session typically costs €25–50, or €10–20 as an add-on to a facial. A course of 6 sessions costs €130–250. LED masks (€90–400) are available for home use — their effect is weaker than professional devices, but they are convenient for daily use. Always choose a device with eye protection and CE certification.
Frequently asked questions
What is LED therapy?
LED therapy is a light treatment that uses red, blue or other-spectrum LED light to stimulate the skin. Red stimulates collagen, and blue reduces acne bacteria and inflammation.
Is LED therapy safe in Estonia?
Yes, LED light is safe for all skin types and can be used together with other treatments. With longer use, wear eye protection — direct red light in particular can damage the eyes.
Where can I learn more about LED therapy?
Contact a beautician at an Estonian beauty salon, who offers a course of LED therapy and will assess whether your skin benefits more from red or blue light. Combining it with microneedling or a peel amplifies the result.
