IPL — intense pulsed light — is a broad-spectrum light device used in Estonian aesthetic clinics for hair removal, lightening pigmentation spots, reducing blood vessels and treating acne. Unlike a laser (which emits one precisely defined wavelength), IPL emits a range of light from 500–1200 nm, so the same device can treat different targets simply by swapping filters. The treatment is offered only by clinics holding a Health Board (Terviseamet) operating licence.
How does IPL work?
IPL light is selectively absorbed by the target — the hair's pigment (melanin), a pigmentation spot, or the haemoglobin in a blood vessel. The energy turns to heat there and destroys the structure, without damaging the surrounding skin. Because IPL works on pigment, it suits fair skin (Fitzpatrick I–III) with dark hair best; the combination of dark skin and light hair does not respond.
Sessions are done at 4–6 week intervals, usually 6–10 sessions in total to achieve a lasting result. After each session, the treated area must be protected from the sun with SPF 50 for at least 4 weeks, to prevent pigmentation spots from forming.
