How does laser hair removal work?
The laser beam is directed into the skin, where the hair's pigment (melanin) absorbs the energy and converts it into heat. The heat destroys the follicle's growth cells, preventing new hair from forming. Different laser technologies suit different skin types — alexandrite (755 nm) for lighter skin, diode (810 nm) as the universal option, and Nd:YAG (1064 nm) for darker skin (Fitzpatrick IV–VI).
Hair grows in three phases, and the laser only works during anagen (the active growth phase), which is why 6–10 sessions spaced 4–8 weeks apart are needed. After a full course, the lasting reduction is 80–95%; any remaining fine hairs are removed, if needed, at maintenance visits once a year.
