Microneedling is a procedure in which thousands of microscopic punctures are created in the skin with a specialised roller device or an automatic pen-shaped device. The controlled micro-injury stimulates fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin. At Estonian beauty clinics and medical cosmetology centres, microneedling is performed by trained cosmetologists and doctors -- the procedure suits acne scarring, fine wrinkles, enlarged pores and stretch marks.
How does microneedling work?
The pen-shaped device moves 9-36 microneedles up and down at high frequency, creating controlled punctures in the skin to a depth of 0.25-2.5 mm. Each puncture triggers a healing cascade: neutralisation of free radicals, fibroblast activation and new collagen synthesis. The result develops over 4-12 weeks, and the effect is boosted by infusing a serum (for example PRP, peptides or hyaluronic acid) through the freshly opened skin barrier.
A single session takes 60-90 minutes (including waiting for the numbing cream to take effect), and a course is 3-6 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart. After a session the skin is red for 24-72 hours and may flake. It must be protected from the sun with SPF 50 for at least 4 weeks. Needling to a greater depth (over 1.5 mm) is only carried out at a licensed clinic.
Microneedling in Estonia
At Estonian beauty clinics a single microneedling session typically costs €100-200, or €250-400 combined with PRP (your own blood plasma). A course of 3 sessions costs €280-540. Deeper medical microneedling that treats scars and stretch marks is carried out at a doctor's appointment holding a Health Board (Terviseamet) operating licence. Surface microneedling (up to 0.5 mm) is also available from a cosmetologist at a quality beauty salon.
