A chemical peel removes the skin's surface layer using chemicals, enzymes or mechanical devices. At Estonian beauty salons and cosmetology studios, trained cosmetologists offer different types of peel -- superficial, medium and deep. The general aim is to even out the complexion, soften fine wrinkles, reduce acne scarring and improve the skin's surface texture.
How does a chemical peel work?
A superficial peel (AHA/BHA acids, lactobacillus ferments, enzyme peels) removes only dried cells from the stratum corneum and triggers renewal -- recovery takes 1-3 days, and it suits a care routine every 2-4 weeks. A medium peel (TCA 15-35%, glycolic acid 50-70%) penetrates deeper layers of the epidermis -- recovery takes 5-10 days, and it suits treating pigment spots and fine wrinkles.
A deep peel (TCA 50%+, phenol peel) reaches the dermis and is carried out only at a doctor's appointment at a clinic holding a Health Board (Terviseamet) operating licence. The Estonian database lists 44 chemical-peel providers, mostly offering superficial and medium peels. SPF 50 must be used for at least 4 weeks after every peel session.
