Anti-ageing care 2026 — what works and what's a myth

9 min read·Author: Ilusalong24.ee toimetus·Published: ·Updated:

Evidence-based anti-ageing methods in Estonia 2026: SPF, retinol, peels, microneedling, HIFU, Profhilo, botox. Programmes by age group.

Anti-aging care is the largest segment of Estonia’s beauty market — over 60% of the clinics in the Ilusalong24.ee directory offer related services. But what actually works and what is just sales talk? We gathered the views of Estonian cosmetologists and dermatologists into one overview.

The 4 main factors of skin aging

  1. Sun damage (photoaging): responsible for ~80% of the skin’s visible aging.
  2. Collagen decline: from age 25 we lose ~1% of collagen per year, with a sharp drop during menopause.
  3. Oxidative stress: pollutants, an unbalanced diet, stress.
  4. Hormonal changes: estrogen supports the skin’s hydration — during menopause the skin dries out.

What actually works — evidence-based methods

1. Sun protection (SPF 50+)

The only cosmetics-industry product whose efficacy has been studied over decades. Daily use (including in winter) reduces photoaging by 23–28%. Recommendation for the Estonian climate: a mineral SPF (zinc/titanium oxide), reapplied every 2 h when outdoors.

2. Retinol / retinoic acid

Vitamin A derivatives are the only class of cosmetic products clinically proven to reduce wrinkles. Start with a low concentration (0.3%) and increase gradually.

3. TCA and glycolic peels

A medium TCA peel (15–20%) 3–4 times a year boosts collagen production and smooths the surface texture. See our peel overview.

4. Microneedling + PRP

Dermapen + the client’s own platelet-rich plasma (“vampire facial”) is one of the most effective collagen-stimulating treatments. A course of 4–6 visits, 3–4 weeks apart.

5. HIFU or SMAS tightening

Reorganizing collagen in the deep layers. Suitable for clients aged 35+ with a clearly “sagging” contour. See the HIFU/SMAS guide.

6. Bio-stimulating injections

Profhilo and Sculptra are the rising tier of 2025–2026. They don’t add volume but stimulate the body’s own collagen. Results last 3–9 months.

7. Botox

Preventive (“baby botox”) from age 28. Result: wrinkles that haven’t yet “set into” the skin don’t form. See the botox guide.

What not to do

  • Don’t buy “miracle serums” priced at 500 € — the effect depends on the active ingredient.
  • Don’t do dermarolling at home with long needles (1.5 mm+) — it’s a risk.
  • Don’t jump straight to invasive procedures — start with peels and retinol.
  • Don’t believe in “natural anti-aging diets” — the effect is achievable, but slow.

When should you start anti-aging care?

It depends on genetics and lifestyle. On average at 27–32 — that's when collagen production starts to fall by 1% a year. Before that, focus on sun protection and antioxidants.

What is the most effective anti-aging treatment?

Probably daily use of SPF 50+ (earlier studies show it reduces photoaging by 24%). Among treatments, the most effective in practice are: retinol, TCA peel, microneedling + PRP, HIFU/SMAS.

Is it worth investing 1 000+ €/year in anti-aging care?

It depends on your goals. If you want to look visually 5 years younger in 5–10 years, then yes. If you just want “good skin after 30”, 300–500 €/year (peels, 1 HydraFacial, retinol) is often enough.

What are the “anti-aging myths”?

1) The effectiveness of “collagen drinks” — minimal scientific support. 2) “1.5 mm dermarollers at home” — dangerous without training. 3) “Natural retinol alternatives” — bakuchiol comes close, but is weaker. 4) “Vitamin infusions for beauty” — deliver no visible skin effect.
