Microdermabrasion
Also known as: microdermabrasion, diamond peel, crystal peel
A mechanical exfoliation treatment in which a jet of crystals or a diamond tip removes the dead skin layer. The old-school forerunner of HydraFacial.
Microdermabrasion is a mechanical exfoliation of the skin's surface layer, performed with a special device fitted with either a crystal tip or a diamond tip. At Estonian beauty salons and cosmetology studios, microdermabrasion is offered by trained cosmetologists -- the procedure suits evening out the complexion, removing dead keratin cells, softening fine wrinkles and improving product absorption.
How does microdermabrasion work?
Crystal-type microdermabrasion uses aluminium-oxide microcrystals, which are sprayed onto the skin through a vacuum-powered tip and drawn back out together with the dead cells. Diamond-type devices have a synthetic-diamond tip that abrades the skin's surface layer while the vacuum draws the removed cells away. Both techniques exfoliate only the stratum corneum (about 10-30 µm), which heals within 24-48 hours.
A single session lasts 30-45 minutes and can be combined with other treatments in the same session (a facial, a peel, LED therapy, serum infusion). A course of 4-6 sessions spaced 2 weeks apart gives the maximum result. The skin must be protected with SPF for 1-2 weeks after each session. Contraindications: active acne, a rosacea flare-up, recent retinol use, skin inflammation.
Microdermabrasion in Estonia
At Estonian beauty salons and cosmetology studios, a single microdermabrasion session usually costs €45-80, or €70-110 combined with a facial. A course of 4 sessions costs €160-290. Some salons also offer simpler tip kits for home use, but the effect of a professional device is significantly stronger. It suits especially well before big events, when you want an instantly brighter complexion.
